About the Data

Since 2005, WHAIC’s PricePoint website has been providing patients and families with important information about health care services and charges in Wisconsin. A national model for price transparency, PricePoint embodies the long-standing commitment of Wisconsin hospitals to sharing information that can help patients and families make informed decisions about their care.

With PricePoint users can: Step through a user-friendly, guided process for selecting the services and hospitals specific to their situation Compare charges and other key information for hospitals Obtain information on the statewide average charges for services that may be provided by non-hospital providers in Wisconsin such as pharmacy, professional services, labs, rehabilitation, skilled nursing and others

All of the hospital-related data found on PricePoint is collected and published by the WHA Information Center (WHAIC). WHAIC has collected and disseminated complete, accurate, and timely data about charges and services provided by Wisconsin hospitals and ambulatory surgery centers since 2004. Pursuant to Chapter 153, Wisconsin Statutes, all Wisconsin hospital and surgery centers are required to submit inpatient and outpatient data to WHA Information Center (WHAIC) each quarter. In 2017, WHAIC expanded the hospital-specific information in PricePoint to include services and charges that may be provided by non-hospital providers across the state – providing a more complete picture of the charges associated with a particular procedure or treatment.

PricePoint was produced in part by using computer software created, owned and licensed by the 3M Company. PricePoint also uses data provided by the Wisconsin Health Information Organization (WHIO) to provide health care consumers with information related to professional, rehabilitation, skilled nursing, ancillary, and pharmacy services that are not part of the hospital facility charges included with the WHAIC data. WHIO aggregates commercial, Medicare Advantage and Medicaid claims data to provide the information used in PricePoint.
